Review of the Macgregor 24 by Gary Eagar

Year built 1973
Location of boat Canada
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2014
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would. I bought this boat from my buddy. He has owned it for 18 years and for the last 15 years has been sitting in his garage. He bought it from the original owners family after he passed away.
Gear that's been added Yes, GPS plotter, depth gauge, new VHF radio, fire extinguishers, solar panels, new head, batteries, sail cover.New 5 HP, 4 stroke, 25 inch shaft Mercury outboard.
Structural or complex improvements Yes,painted the complete boat, hull is in A1 shape, redoing all the boat cushions in 2015,redoing the inside complete over this summer 2015. Keel cables where replaced a few years ago and are stainless steel.Replacing the pop up top canvas this summer.
The boat's best features I\'ve owned bigger cruisers in the past then this boat, handles rough water better than any boat i have been on in the past.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Engine that came with the boat a 1985 Merc 9.8 HP 20 inch shaft. Water leaks.
Sailing characterisitcs Great boat to sail on your own, easy to handle
Motoring characterisitcs Even with the 9.8 HP was a miser on gas.
Liveability For one person its great, be a little cramped with two unless the pop up was up. I plan on living on the boat from mid April to end of October when i retire at the end of 2015. Boat has a 15 gallon water tank and a 20 gallon holding tank. You don\'t see holding tanks much in boats this size.Mostly porta potties.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I haven\'t dealt with Macgregor at all except on the web site and they don\'t have any information on the older boats.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments It\'s a very sound boat considering it is 42 years old. I\'ve seen newer boats in worse condition at 7 years of age then this one is at 42 years old.
