Review of the Macgregor 26M by Hans Volkhart

Year built 2005
Location of boat United States
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? The trailer ability, size and empty weight allow us to increase our sailing ground radius extremely. Cruising all the Great Lakes is definitely no problem. Located in Chicago, we have been to the Apostle Islands, North Channel, Lake Huron, Lake Erie on one, two and three week trips with crew of 5 to 6 people. We live aboard during our cruising time and only seek a harbor to re-provision.
Gear that's been added Pressure water system with 6 gal and 52 gal. fresh water tank, outside shower and swim platform Propane stove with gas tank outside, fridge (12V & 110V),house battery 160AH, inverter (12V to 110V)stereo, chart plotter, autopilot, VHF, depth sounder, full enclosure, Honda generator, Boat tarp for trailering.
Structural or complex improvements Bulk heads on rear berth, additional storage bins (2) above rear berth, windows for rear berth into cockpit, LED light in rear berth, swing ladder to cockpit, removed factory galley and installed custom galley with fridge, added access to storage below galley, added floor underneath galley for storage of cooking utensils, added “dry” locker in front of galley, removed mirror and added shelf, upsized anchor roller to accept Danfoss anchor, added second mast hound for spinnaker.
The boat's best features weight to space ratio perfect starter boat like the "Big" size engine to get out of trouble
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. inside wall covering (carpet) needs to be dried thoroughly and looks "used" after 7 years.
Sailing characterisitcs not the best sail boat but we get to where we want
Motoring characterisitcs not the best motor boat but we get to where we want
Liveability we love our "Zugvogel"
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) We purchased from Bill Beers @ www.boats4sail.info and never had to deal with Macgregor direct.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bill @ boats4sail has given me the very best "shopping" experience of all capital goods i have ever bought. His knowledge, honesty and expertise is looking for alike. Even more important is his after sales service. I broke my dagger board, called Bill and had a replacement within less than a week. The same for my Jib, replaced it with a Genoa. I could go on and on and on. Give him a call 262 567 6230 and just by talking to him you will learn why to by from Boats4sail.
Other comments If you want to have fun on the water on a tight budget, go sailing. If you want to explorer different sailing grounds go Macgregor. If you want have an experience of a lifetime, buy from Bill.
