Review of the Macgregor 26M by Bob Frye

Year built 2009
Location of boat Racine, WI
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2009
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Bimini top, (2) 6 gal. fuel tanks, 2nd battery, solar vent, danforth anchor, main sail cover and jib bag, lines led aft, upgraded deck hardware package from my dealer "Boats-4-Sail" in Oconomowoc, WI.
Structural or complex improvements Electric head with 10 gal. fresh water tank and 10 gal. waste water tank, shore power w/panel and 4 receptacles
The boat's best features The versatility of the power sailor concept which allows me to do some sailing but if I'm in a hurry to visit a spot 40 miles away or the kids want to do some "tubing", I can fire up the Etec 60.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Two minor issues with the Etec which have been resolved
Sailing characterisitcs As I expected, not a "great" sailor but certainly a good one.
Motoring characterisitcs Requires attention to steering to maintain course but you're supposed to be paying attention. I don't believe the boat with the stock Etec 60hp will do 24mph as MacGregor states, at least mine never has. Myself and my 8 year old on board with one 6 gal. fuel tank and empty ballast, smooth water, topped out at 19.5 on GPS
Liveability Perfect for the 4 of us for the weekend
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Some 2nd or 3rd emails required sometimes to get a response
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I purchased from Bill Beers at Boats-4-Sail in Oconomowoc, WI. I couldn't be happier with my experience with Bill. He's a good, zero pressure guy who truly did talk me out of a few "upgrades" that I wouldn't really need. Others he suggested I use the boat for a season and then let him know what I thought I might like to add.
Other comments I'm glad I pulled the trigger and finally bought.
