Review of the Macgregor 17 by Joe

Year built 1972
Location of boat Hickory, NC
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added New sails, new rigging, new paint, ..... pretty much resurrected her from the grave
Structural or complex improvements Rebuilt the keel and reinforced the fore deck. added teak toe rails. My pictures are at ; http://www.flickr.com/photos/25826781@N07/sets/72157604736968896/
The boat's best features Easy to trailer and easy to sail alone
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I sometimes need more space when I want more than 2 other people with me. 4 on board is crowded and more than that is pretty much not worth the effort.
Sailing characterisitcs overall pretty good. I haven't had a lot of other experiences to compare with.
Motoring characterisitcs I have used a 4hp outboard and a 70lb trolling motor. I prefer the trolling motor for instant power and quiet operation, but for times when I might need the capacity for a longer distance I use the gas outboard.
Liveability I wouldn't want to stay too long on board, but I could do it if necessary.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments It's a fun little boat, and has been fun to rebuild and tinker with.
