Review of the Macgregor 26X by Vicki and Paul Garlick

Year built 1998
Location of boat Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? We had a Farr 6000 before this and Vicki feels a lot safer on the MacGregor. Quite different sailing and we are coming to grips with this. Will be staying on it at times. We boat both sea and lakes, as New Zealand has beautiful lakes with lots of hiding holes for yachts to moar for the night.Would like to take out a 26M to see the difference, but we are happy with our boat. Yes would buy it again, as I (Vicki) am not scared of it and go on the boat regularly now, I would not go on the Farr..
Gear that's been added Not yet
Structural or complex improvements Bimini and Spray dodger for sea sailing, and the sun.
The boat's best features The beauty of having the big motor, so if you have no wind days, you can still fish, ski or just putter off somewhere quiet for a picnic
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing yet. Our furling sail wasn't working due to other owner fiddling, but now works perfectly. great to have the mast raiser also.
Sailing characterisitcs Reasonably new to this, learnt first hand what the boat does when you forget the ballast and put the sail up...Big nono!!!!
Motoring characterisitcs Great. spectators have been amazed and how the boat gets off its date...
Liveability Great, so roomy and toilet handy too the back so good if your sailing and need to go. Cooking facilities etc great. will no doubt add a fridge etc at later date, and will probably put this under the deck area.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No
Other comments If you like the best of both worlds, buy one, and enjoy it...Because of its size it is a very safe boat, and with the motor you can get out of rough weather etc. Would give it a 10, my husband until he gets the hang off sailing her would give it a 8....
