Review of the Macgregor 26C by Douglas M. Asbury

Year built 1965
Location of boat OHIO AND FLORIDA
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would, in fact I did. I owned a similar one and decided I would try the motor sailer 26X. After a year with that, I wanted a boat that would really sail so I sold the 26X and bought this boat.
Gear that's been added Shore power, radio, Roller furler
Structural or complex improvements These boats are very solid. It is a lot of fun to sail.
The boat's best features The water ballast is wonderful. The boat is very stable and predictable. Also, I have pulled it all over with a Chrysler mini-van. It can sleep 6, but 4 is our usual number. The motor mount is very easy to reach and sturdy.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing has been a problem.
Sailing characterisitcs I have sailed it in 5 footers and low winds. It will beat most others of similar. If you want a boat that loves to jump on and off the trailer at the ramp, you will love this boat.
Motoring characterisitcs It motors great with a 8 hp motor
Liveability For a boat of this size and portability it is great. There a lot of people that talk down about the Mac and you will have to hunt hard to find an owner that does not love this boat. Actually in light wind they are the ones behind you:)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No issues with boat.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought it from previous owner.
Other comments In 1995 they switched from the 26C to the motor sailer 26x. This the the ultimate boat to learn to sail on and have fun with your family on the lake. If you decide to put it behind the car you can easily take it long distances. I may sell it someday for a big boat, but that will be to live on. Until then I will enjoy the flexibility of this boat.
