Review of the Macgregor 25 by Mike Hill

Year built 1983
Location of boat Victoria Canada
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? sure, why not.
Gear that's been added Stereo, voltmeter, ... don't need much.
Structural or complex improvements made a new mahogany table, boom vang, antenna moved to top of mast, methyl alcohol stove, added a stowage compartment at back of cockpit, ...lots of little things.
The boat's best features its the K Car of sailboats! you dont have to feel bad about messing around with modifying it. you can trailer it and not worry about moorage costs. they are cheap.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. lets face it - they are not built very well. replacing keel cables, etcetera are just routine items, but there is nothing rigorous about their construction. the same can be said of the trailer - i am amazed that there are not more reports of problems with folks towing these things around with no brakes, single axles... and mac sailors are not always the most mechanically adept people around or they would likely have bought something else!!
Sailing characterisitcs very slow in light winds, otherwise it is fine, .. but this is the only boat i have had.
Motoring characterisitcs its good with the 15 horse Johnson, though its kind of goofy having to use the tiller AND the motor to steer in tight quarters.
Liveability I think its good for a week or so if the weather is good. it is cool and rainy here and its too small to deal with rain (especially if you havent discovered the penetrating sealant from Sudbury.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Bought a keel bolt from the official parts supplier - far too expensive.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments great boat to have if you dont want to look after something that has to sit in the water.
