Review of the Macgregor 26X by Steve Leon

Year built 1996
Location of boat Bend, Or.
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! I researched the boat very thoroughly for 3 years before purchasing.
Gear that's been added New Mast Step Plate and blocks for halyards led aft, Humminbird fish finfer, Electric faucet.
Structural or complex improvements Nope
The boat's best features The versatility is one of the key aspects. fun to sail, fun to drag a tube behind and enough room to actually be comfortable onboard.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. None.
Sailing characterisitcs I expected her to sail like a "pig." I have been pleasantly surprised with her sailing characteristics.
Motoring characterisitcs I read some negative remarks about steering under power. I have not experienced any abnormalities. Under power at slow speeds She handles much better with about 6 inches of centerboard down and one rudder down.
Liveability Plenty of room for me and first mate plus my two wiener dogs.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have had good response from the factory, however I've found that Blue Water Yachts in Seattle is actually more helpful with the "how to" questions.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from a private party.
Other comments I am very happy with the boat. We do one week a year cruising the San Juan Islands and many weekends on local lakes. Regardless of the "nay sayers" the 26x is a great boat that is affordable and very fun.
