Review of the Macgregor 26X by Ray Jones

Year built 1997
Location of boat Florida
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes...(If only wife would quit falling off boat)
Gear that's been added Installed 110 Volt load center, duplexes, shorepower, 110V Microwave, Carry window unit A/C for forward hatch, Color TV, DVD-CD Player, Reworked Galley and installed shelf above galley, Rearranged Lower Galley by removing factory shelf and building shelf, doors, and installing small microwave. Carry 1000 Watt Honda generator for anchorages. Have small fridge 12V/110V am considering securing over battery box/seat.
Structural or complex improvements None to date (Considering tether for wife)
The boat's best features Trailerability...Can't find permanent slip let alone an affordable slip in Florida
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. MAST RAISING is absolutely horrible. Takes forever using the mast raising system to winch. Considering rigging an inexpensive come-along to expedite this process. STEERING is hard. Seem to be having problem with steering gear box or cable? SWING KEEL would not drop upon first adventure out WIFE fell off boat at ramp, hit dock, and into water
Sailing characterisitcs Just started and purchased this as an "learning" boat. Adventures cut short following Man Overboard of WIFE
Motoring characterisitcs Extremely hard steering when motoring...Boat all over the place and hard to control at slow speeds
Liveability Comfortable for two ( Keep WIFE inside boat), Crowded with four.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) May need some parts and from what I read will be a real hoot to get parts from Mac.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Private individual. Did not see small cracking and crazing on starboard side once removed from water. Nothing structual but noticeable sitting upon trailer.
Other comments So far appears to be a good "learning" type boat until we make the comitment to move up in size. WIFE ready to try it again and hopefully stay aboard and disembark on will & not otherwise.
