Review of the Macgregor 25 by John Tucker

Year built 1978
Location of boat Hilo, Hawai
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, without question.
Gear that's been added All new marine wiring, self-tailing winches, all new halyards and sheets, new standing rigging, New electronics (wind speed , depth gauge, boat speed, Vhf, Compass, Auto Tiller, Propane stove, Batteries (house and starter)New performance rudder from Ida Sailor (Definitly a must), Used Sails (Racing) found on internet.
Structural or complex improvements I wouldn't call anything I did as complex, just safety improvements for the waters I sail in. I did strengthen the deck under the mast to distribute the mast forces more. I also beefed up and glassed in the chain plates. The trade winds can build very quickly from 10-15 to 25-35 knts very quickly
The boat's best features Strong, fast, easy to work on and modify. Comfortable boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Standard rudder sucked.
Sailing characterisitcs I was out yesterday winds 15-25 knts. Sea's 4-6 feet sailed beautifully
Motoring characterisitcs Motors fine, powered by Honda 4 stroke 9 hp motor
Liveability Quite comfortable for my family of four.Me, wife two small children, I usually sail with a friend so its mostly just him and I.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't dealt with directly. I spoke by phone with someone regarding a question I had about my Venture 25 and they new nothing. Only knew about the newer 26's. Said my boat was "really old".
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from private owner.
Other comments It's a great little boat thats trailable too!
