Review of the Macgregor 25 by Steve

Year built 1979
Location of boat Ithaca, NY
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added I've added a tiller tamer and I've run the lines back to the cockpit. Motor controls in the cockpit.
Structural or complex improvements I rebuilt the rudder.
The boat's best features Light enought to easily trailor yet big enough for a weekend or longer on the boat. It is also very foregiving. It is also very dry even with pounding waves.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudders were not designed with a foil shape and the balance was off. I built a replacement that made it a pleasure to steer.
Sailing characterisitcs Faster downwind than many other boats but the keel design doesn't provide much lift so that it doesn't point as well as many boats.
Motoring characterisitcs In rough water it's a good idea to have extra weight forward to keep the bow from bouncing so much. Other than that it motors just fine under all conditions
Liveability A little tight but manageable for up to a week even for someone over 6 feet tall. It could use better cooler/refrigeration.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I haven't dealt with MacGregor because I haven't really had any problems.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments It's probably the best boat for the money on the used market.
