Review of the Macgregor 26S by G. B. "Vick" Vickery

Year built 1990
Location of boat Gulfport, Mississippi
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? In a second! I got a very good buy on the boat from an individual selling it in Long Beach, MS, just down the road and kept it in the Long Beach harbor until I was able to get a slip at the Gulfport Yacht Club.
Gear that's been added Have run all lines to the cockpit; spinnaker; 130% and 150% headsails; stove below and grill up top on the newly installed pushpit; topping lift; lazy jacks; single-line reefing; autopilot; handheld and mounted VHS's; radar reflector; pop-top enclosure. Well equipped for overnighting even though we mostly daysail.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Easy to sail, comfortable for the two of us, pop-top makes for easier use of the cabin area.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Have had no problems with the boat...it leaves the factory in very basic form, but I prefer to be able to set it up the way I want it. I would prefer larger self-tailing winches since Karen uses them for sail trimming, but haven't replaced them due to cost.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat has handled well in situations from calm seas with light winds to 5'+ seas and winds in the 30 mph area. I have never felt in any danger on the boat. You do need to reef and go to smaller headsails early since the boat is very light and the ballast high.
Motoring characterisitcs My 8hp Nissan 2-stroke pushes the boat easily to hull-speed.
Liveability Have stayed on the boat comfortably for 3-4 days; after that I find it a little tight.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have been in touch with MacGregor on several occassions and have found them to be very helpful and courtious.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from individual.
Other comments Have been well pleased...won't sell "Cash Out" until I'm ready to make a big step to somethng in the 35'-38' class.
