Review of the Macgregor 23 by Greg Pecaut

Year built 1973
Location of boat Traverse City, Mi.
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I love the looks, especially the cutter rig. It sails well and handles ok. I sure would like it better if it was larger. It trailers well, and has enough room for two to stay overnight without being too tight.
Gear that's been added I have a VHF, Wind indicater, compass, GPS, 150%, and storm jib. 5 Lbs danforth high tinsel with 6' chain.
Structural or complex improvements Working on it, Want to put wood lining through out the cabin. Reappolstered the cusions. Putting in a 120V dockside system with battery charger.
The boat's best features The cutter rig and it's trailerable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Needed total rewiring, Could use the forward forstay mounted higher on the mast.
Sailing characterisitcs Have had a chance to sail in light winds, the 150 helps a lot. Have had it out in wind up to 25 knots so far, handled well. I haven't had any problems with weather helm, just balance your sails. And the cutter rig makes that easy.
Motoring characterisitcs Have had no problems motoring. I have a 7hp on the original motor mount.
Liveability Could use more room. Storage under the seats is limited. V berth bunks are short, but work fine for kids. Msstly just make sandwiches, or eat out of cans on board.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No, have counted mostly on these web sites.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought one from a private sale, that was fine. But bought one from a marina where it had been abnandonded for over 5 years. They weren't helpful at all.
Other comments Love the little boat, just wish it was bigger. Otherwise it's great!!
