Review of the Macgregor 26X by bill keller

Year built 1997
Location of boat moline, illinois
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this boat has met the needs I have sailling the Mississippi. Because of the strong current we have a hard time making forward movement. Often we can sail very well in 10 knot wind, yet make no speed over ground. Using the motor to compensate for current we can actually make head way. I have also modified it so I can trailer it easily. I purchaded a new dual axel from load master and it really improved the ability to take the boat places. I am with in seven hours of some great sailing areas and take advantaqge when possible.
Gear that's been added traveler, roller furling, reefing system, air condition, trailer, larger winches, side windows, air vents, up graded electrical, larger gas tanks, encolsed cocpit,
Structural or complex improvements Trailer
The boat's best features The amount of room for the money
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. There are many weak areas of the boat that need improvement. However, the boat is sailable without up grades. The upgrades just make it easier and more personable.
Sailing characterisitcs the boat sails well, however is not extremely fast. It will point much better with the traveler system. I also added full battens to the main. I have noticed an improvement in perfoprmance with this addition
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 50 hp which gives me 14 mph with a normal loaded boat with no water. I think this is realistic and find it hard to believe claims of 20+ even with a stripped down boat.
Liveability great with the air. it lacks showers, but this is easily compensated using an on deck shower
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I only once had to call for a rub rail section. They were pleasant and easy to deal with.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any the orginal purchase was excellent. the dealer has sence quit handling macs. i deal with anchorage in boulder co using the phone or internet. they are greaat to work with.
