Review of the Macgregor 24 by Tom Purcell

Year built 1973
Location of boat Georgetown MD Sassafras River
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I'm not sure I would. I bought it on e-bay at a good price of 750. But it was in bad shape, been sitting for 15 years. It required a lot of work to get it back into shape. The hull is fine, a few soft spots in deck.
Gear that's been added All new running, standing rigging. New bulkheads, rudder, tiller, new jib, new motor 4 stroke 8 hp Yamaha. Love it quiet strong 6.4 knots.2 batterys, charger, cd player, compass, GPS, ground tackle, etc.
Structural or complex improvements All interior wood was rotted from rain water, replaced all.
The boat's best features I like the swing keel, I sometimes run aground a bit and all I need to do is raise the keel and I'm on my way again. I also like the pop top, good visability from the cockpit, and extra room in the cabin. The boat sails nicely.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. All the deck hardware that is or was original seems a bit small. I have beefed it up when I replaced items
Sailing characterisitcs I have not been in wind over 15 yet so I have not reefed the main yet. So far the boat is a lot of fun. I sail on the upper Chesapeake.
Motoring characterisitcs Very easy to steer, goes forever on a gallon of gas at 3.5 knots.
Liveability Great camping for 2 of us, still fun but a little cramped for 4
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) NA
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any NA
Other comments I'm having a lot of fun and good times. My first boat was a little 17 ft. Weekender I built. That was fun but the 24 is soo much faster and roomier.
