Review of the Macgregor 26X by bud richard

Year built 2000
Location of boat michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes, but only from a dealer in state with service capibilaty. there are none in michigan closest is ohio or indina!
Gear that's been added lots, thats half of the fun. there is no dealer in michigan to service mac gregor,s there is a good one in burton, ohio.(power sail center) so i have done all the add work my self.
Structural or complex improvements have not, and i have not undone those that come with it, e.g. removeing flotation, adding over 50 hp,etc? nor do i allow a loose nut to hold the helm!
The boat's best features safty, ease of riging, handeling tralering and winter storage.the 26X IS NOT a bottom less hole in the water in which you have to poor money. i have owned homes on the water front, i like having this one ON THE WATER and being able to put it on the water where ever i wish. and when at my home dock, where it is enjoyed most every day when not exploring other ports. winter storage is in the back yard tarped and where i can messabout with it all winter long. i just turn on the electric heater and continyou to enjoy the boat, charting trips for next seasin, and laying out my next up grade.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. every thing has worked as desined, other then had to replace the spreders, (alum.colapsed) i replaced them with 1"s/s thay shoud have ben that in the first place. i have had a small leek in to the high side of the bilge on the starboard since boat was deliverd. i finaly found the source now i can fix it,its ben coming from the the balass tank and under the head floor i will fix it next time it's on the trailer and tanks are empty!this has not ben a big thing just anoyingand a real chalange to locate the sorce.
Sailing characterisitcs good, fun, exciting, chalanging, rewarding, relaxing!
Motoring characterisitcs good. my motoring is by a yamaha T50
Liveability 26x for its size is the best i seen in my 60+yr.of sailing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) very help full. but wish thay had not refured me to a dealer for ann arber,mi. who in fact is in AR. has no service in mi. or for that matter any where. this is not a good link in the mac gregor network.we realy need a mac full service dealer in mi. MAYBEE thay never saw a map of michigan with its G/Ls shore lines
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any do not buy from a dealer who can not service your equipment, boat and the rest! there are meny good dealers out there i wish there were even one in michigan. it takes more then a 800# with call forwording to repersent a quality product.
Other comments the 26X is the best value and design i have seen to date
