Review of the Macgregor 25 by Mitch Riley

Year built 1983
Location of boat Garcon Point Florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I could not ask for a better boat to fit my requirements.
Gear that's been added GPS, Bottom Line fish finder, Magna Grill, Compass, storage racks, wiring, tiller tamer, cabin lights.
Structural or complex improvements None needed so far.
The boat's best features Affordable, easy to maintain, shallow draft (keel and rudder up) for easy beaching. Trailers as easy as a powerboat. Almost sails itself in light wind which it don't take much wind to move it. Does not have "dated" lines.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Swing keel cable had to be replaced. The bow eye had to be reinforced with a stainless steel backing plate to keep from pulling out.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails great in light winds. Have had it in the Gulf of Mexico during really rough seas and the boat handled it better than I. You can't sail it over even though I have tried.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors fine for a 25' boat considering you are doing it with a 10 horsepower motor or less. Keel up and steer with rudder for open areas. Keel up rudder up and steer with the motor in close areas.
Liveability Very good for two people even for a full week but four is pushing it for anything other than daysailing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Didn't.
Other comments If you are looking for a boat to sail as a past time not an obsession there is no way you could get a better boat for the money.
