Review of the Macgregor 25 by JNeel

Year built 1979
Location of boat Dahlgren, VA / Washington, D.C.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES! These boats do not have the great reputation that they deserve (solely based on the fact that they were mass produced). However, the affordable pricing, mobility
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features It's the ultimate "Pocket Cruiser." It is light enough for easy transport and yet a well balanced boat for a stable and solid sail.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs steady, fairly fast, responsive, and forgiving
Motoring characterisitcs just like any motor on a sailboat "A Necessary Evil!"
Liveability The MacGregor 25 would be ideal for someone only interested in daysailing or a weekender. Sleeps 4 comfortably, but it's limited cabin space certainly limits the time you could spend in there. But then again, different people have different standards for this one.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments I highly recommend these boats for anyone interested in an affordable and yet reliable sailboat. Of course, it also depends on the previous owner's dilligence in taking care and maintaining the boat. However, due to the fact that most of these boats are on trailers and not wet docked, you'll find that most are in great shape and don't have to worry about blisters in the hull and most work required are typically just cosmetics and cleaning. Good luck and go where the wind blows!
