Review of the Macgregor 24 by john

Year built 1971
Location of boat SF Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, as a first boat I've been very happy with it. I paid more than I should have, considering some rot inside, etc.. should have shopped a bit more.
Gear that's been added All new running rigging, fenders, depth, VHF and antenna, battery/charger, new motor (5hp nissan 4stk).
Structural or complex improvements Just tore out the V-berth which was rotted from rainwater sitting in it. Am redesigning interior to make roomier and more inviting.
The boat's best features Trailerability, ease of sailing, shallow draft when needed in the rivers, fairly stable in higher than expected winds, simple design. It's been a good boat for day sailing and a few overnight trips.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Boat seems well built, though lighter than many 24s,. Most problems I had are from being 30 yrs old and not cared for. Structurally, the hull is solid. Would like to take it in open ocean, not secure with the light rigging to do so.
Sailing characterisitcs Very easy, doesn't need a lot of wind to move it. Fairly quick when the wind comes up. Swing keel gives a variety of sailing characteristics, adjustable to the conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs Nissan 5hp 4 stroke pushes it nicely.
Liveability too tight to live on. great for 'camping'.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Good, had to replace a mast tube, factory and local dealer were helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any private owner. N/A
Other comments I would recommend it for someone in this class of boat.
