Review of the Macgregor 26D by FORREST CAMP

Year built 1995
Location of boat OOLAGAH, OKLAHOMA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES I WOULD. NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VESSEL
Gear that's been added HAD MAINSAIL RETROFITTED WITH SECOND SET OF REEF POINTS. HAD A 70% HEAVY WEATHER JIB MADE, DUE TO STRONG SPRING WINDS IN THIS AREA
Structural or complex improvements NONE
The boat's best features SWING KEEL. DUE TO SHALLOWNESS OF LAKE IN PLACES AND VERY EASY TO BEACH WITH THE SWING KEEL AND RUDDER
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. WILL AT SOME POINT I AM SURE RETROFIT TO TURNBUCKLES ON STANDING RIGGING.
Sailing characterisitcs BOAT DOES POINT UP WELL INTO THE WIND. DUE TO WIND CONDITIONS IN THIS AREA, AND MY EXPERIENCE IN BLUE WATER SAILING, I HAVE DISCOVER THAT LESS SAIL IS THE SECRET WITH THIS BOAT, NOT UNLIKE SAILING A DINGHY. I HAD MAINSAIL RETRO FITTED WITH A SECOND REEF POINT, A SMALLER JIB BUILT TO CONTEND WITH STRONG WINDS IN THIS AREA. AS A RESULT CAN SAIL IN ANYTHING THIS AREA THROWS UP AND PROPERLY RIGGED BOAT DOES EXTREMELY WELL, HITTING HULL SPEED WITH MINIMUM OF FUSSINESS. MANY SAILOR IN THIS AREA STILL BELIEVE IN MORE IS BETTER WITH SAIL PLAN EVEN WITH OTHER MACGREGORS OR HUNTER 23 AND 26 BOATS
Motoring characterisitcs I HAVE 4HP SUZUKI, IT JUST GETS ME IN AND OUT OF HARBOR.
Liveability EXCEPT FOR LACK OF HEADROOM IT IS FINE
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) BOUGHT FROM DEALER
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any DID A VERY NICE JOB IN PREPPING THE BOAT AND GIVING ME TIPS ON IT
Other comments NONE
