Review of the Macgregor 26M by EZ

Year built 2003
Location of boat San Francisco
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, but I would have scrutinized the dealer's workmanship more.
Gear that's been added no
Structural or complex improvements Yes, well actually the dealer did it. They shortened the mast by 2 feet to give it better heavy weather performance.
The boat's best features The nice sailing spots in the bay are far from where I keep the boat. The 26M's flexability enables me to shorten an 8 hour cruise to 4 hours.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Hardware that held shelf in the head on was stripped. This made the shelf wobble a lot. Impractical for mounting a portable head.
Sailing characterisitcs Haven't had a chance to sail it in season yet. Sails ok in winds 0-15 mph. Can hold it's own in 25+.
Motoring characterisitcs Better than expected. 19 mph unballasted, 16.5 mph ballasted. Unballasted cruising speed: 15 mph.
Liveability I don't consider myself a liveaboard but I do sleep on it about two nights a week. Sleeps 2 more than adequatly.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Dealer did not tune the engine for the boat and invoked gel coat cracks when they mounted the engine. They did seem very experienced with how to handle the boat and went out of their way to deliver a long distance.
Other comments Not bad for the money. Don't expect perfection. My boat had some minor defects from the factory. Parts of the hull are translucent in sunlight. Not sure if this is a big concern or not. Both sail/power performance better than I expected.
