Review of the Macgregor 21 by Bruce Gant

Year built 1976
Location of boat New Jersey
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Mainsail Slug system, Roller furling jib, Running rigging to cockpit. More interior accomodations will be added each season.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet.
The boat's best features Steady sailing platform, can sail with swing keel up and maintain some steerage. sails passably well in light air.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Attaching and rigging Jib, Raising and lowering main without bolt-rope jamming(see improvements).
Sailing characterisitcs High drag of wetted surfaces could be the reason the boat loses headway very quickly when sails are adjusted or dropped or when kicker motor is stopped when approaching dock. Boat has a tendency for strong weather helm.
Motoring characterisitcs Seems to do well under power, but I generally only use the kicker when docking or setting out. Moter used is small 2.2 short shaft but still adequate for moderate conditions.
Liveability While we haven't used the boat for an overnighter, the cabin seems usable for less than drastic conditions. we are still trying to solve the condensation problem, but we've only had the boat for the latter half of last season. I'm still not sure where to safely place the battery, and if we have a proper size anchor, without an anchor locker, where do we store it?
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat used from a dealer that I have known for a while since I started sailing with a little snark. In this transaction, I was given the impression that the boat was a consignment boat, then a dealer boat, and when the transaction completed, I got the impression that it really was a consignment sale.
Other comments It's a nice boat even when recieved in basic form. The boat is still substantial enough to justify spending time and money customizing features to fit the owner
