Review of the Macgregor 26X by Loren Tower

Year built 2002
Location of boat Portland, OR
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? One reason only for purchase, sail inland passage to AK to visit kids living on 2 different islands there. Was advised 26' was too small but "could" be done. Advise was close to right but happy to say it made the trip and made it a trip to remember.
Gear that's been added 22# claw anchor, 34 gal total fuel storage, Honda 4 stroke outboard, GPS & VHF + backup's.
Structural or complex improvements Bow anchor roller
The boat's best features Water ballast- center board
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No problem
Sailing characterisitcs Because of inexperience and ever changing conditions, used 50hp Nisson O/B majority of time on trip.
Motoring characterisitcs Inland passage to AK. Inexperienced "sailors" used O/B a lot. Dixon entrance going & coming had 5 - 8 seas & 20+ knot winds. No headway at times with ballast so no ballast, centerboard up and rode thru it. Mac "rolled" some but never caused panic among crew. We trusted her and actually enjoyed the whole experience.
Liveability 26 day trip, all but 3 nights aboard for myself & 2 sons. Only problem whole trip was accusations of snoring at night. Each one knew it was the others.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) All thru Dealer
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Nothing but high praise. Blue Water Yachts in Seattle, WA go above and beyond.
