Review of the Macgregor 22 by frank benson

Year built 1985
Location of boat virginia beach va
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, has been a great boat, but would like to get a boat that is a little heavier and more stable in the bay.
Gear that's been added A gas tank box or cover that has worked out real well. It's constructed of fiberglass over plywood and has a removeable lid. More for cometics than anything else, but my wife installed some drink holders to it and it's a real handy spot to place a beer to keep it from spilling when I do my accidential jibes! When I built this thing I realized that there ain't nothing squared on a boat.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Since I keep the boat in some pretty shallow tidal water, and have a 36' bridge to get under to get out to the bay , I find that it's shallow draft and relatively short mast size it's most desirable features.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. My most persistent problem is water seems to get in the boat and collects where the battery is. I think I get fresh water when it rains and salt water when I sail, up where the keel is hinged. I'm thinking about repacking that, but with the thing weighting 500 lbs it seems like it might be a difficult job.
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability Spent a couple of nights on it when we first got it, but it seems to be getting smaller the older I get. It's right up there now with camping out, which I used to love, but now at 60, I find it a little tedious.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
