Review of the Macgregor 26X by Scott

Year built 1997
Location of boat Missouri
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. If I didnt have kids I might have considered a Hunter. However pulling the kids around the lake on ski's is worth the trade off in luxury and performance.
Gear that's been added Genoa, asymmetrical chute, Furler, boom vang, lazy jacks, single line reefing, lines led aft, backstay tensioner, turnbuckles instead of pins, quick releases on all sheets, pelican hooks on life lines, Bottom paint, cockpit cushions, GPS Chart with PC interface, ST40 Wind and roto, Autopilot and remote,VHS, extra battery, 2 new fuse panels, on board charger, 110 shorepower, 4 GFCI outlets with waterproof in use enclosures, Swim ladder step planks, 3 permanent 12 volt fans, reading lights in fore and aft berths, courtesy light in head, Pole storage in aft berth, Fitted Bunk sheets,Shelf under head sink, storage nets throughout, Ummmm, and more I think.
Structural or complex improvements Define complex??
The boat's best features Ease of upkeep. Windex, 409 Acetone and a bunch of paper towels for the interior and dramatically diluted dawn for the deck is all thats necessary through the season, off season keep it covered and right before spring launchuse a polisher, wheel it out and wax it. I spent a good part of my youth on teak maintanence and it has left me scarred.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The gel coat doesnt hold up to UV's very well. Shouldnt have to polish but once every 3 years or so. weve done it every year. Also we only have a 40 pony on the transom and I'm getting a lot of minor cracking around the mountings, (if a crack in a sailboat can be considered minor)
Sailing characterisitcs Doesnt point well but on every other reach it smokes. 15 knot wind the other day with nothing in the air except about 1/2 of a furled Genoa (my wife doesnt like to heel) and we were outrunning everyone else with full canvas up.
Motoring characterisitcs Its definetly fun, I pull the kids around on skis and tubes. We've also outrun a number of storm fronts running flat out, but a couple have caught us. The dodger cant be far behind.
Liveability We spend every weekend aboard including some 3-4 days at a time. No complaints. With the whole family aboard we equal roughly 4.26 adults, but we get along well. I dont reccomend this for a family that doesnt. We seldom eat on the boat, Munchies only. For the bigger meals we leave our food in the car and there is a BBQ and picnic tables right at the top of the stairs from the slip.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments Rice cookers are colorful??
