Review of the Macgregor 25 by John Donovan

Year built 1975
Location of boat City Island, NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I bought this 1975 Venture 25 Macgregor in 2000 and two weeks later I had a triple coronary artery bypass. I have fully recovered and have enjoyed the boat for the past two years. It sails well in light air but I have been out in 25 mph winds solo and found it to perform very well. I do a roller furling genoa so reducing the headsail is easy. This boat had new sails and new interior cushions when purchased and I have succeeded in making it as clean as new. It motors well with a 6 hp Evinrude and does everything I want it to do. I would definitey buy one again.
Gear that's been added none came with a stereo and VHF Soloar ventilator
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features ease of solo sailing, and I do like its looks
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Had to get the area of the bolt for the swing keel repaired as it had worn over the years and stared to leak. ( only cost $200 for an excellent repair job)
Sailing characterisitcs Lively and responsive. I tied my tiller to my Outboard motor and it turns in its own length under power.
Motoring characterisitcs ( above)
Liveability A little too light and bouncy at anchor unless in protected water
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) no dealing
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any NA
Other comments It is a great family boat or solo sailer. Maintanance is easy
