Review of the Macgregor 22 by Art Becofsky

Year built 1971
Location of boat Croton on Hudson
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes ,I definitely would- great old boat, very solid and go into places not many other boats can.Sail at least 4 times a week in the Hudson river. Handles very well and is fast for it's size. Made it into a home away from home, lol
Gear that's been added A fishfinder ,and a hand held GPS, portapoty- shortwave and regular radio-- small TV -alcohol stove. Sink with electic water pump. spotlight on the bow, windvane on top of mast, hoisted anchor lamp, heavier anchor, fishing pole holders, new electic panel and wireing.Cabinet to hold small stove and sink with sliding doors below to hold cooler ,pots etc.
Structural or complex improvements none except refinishing the tiller and rudder.also took off most of the fibreglass on the keel and it is now bottom painted cast iron. Added hand rails to the cabin top.
The boat's best features swing keel- allows mooring at low tide. Can go into shallow water and lift keel to clear. Roller furling--a blessing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. no real problems- slight leaks around keel whinch cable in heavy weather.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails well for me- I dont let it heel more than 15,maybe if I were a bit younger, it would like to but the rails in the water.
Motoring characterisitcs Motor only going in or out of the marina- on windless eves getting back- Marina 8 hp motor works very reliably. I think she actually plains a little on full power.
Liveability with all the convienences I have added it is like a home away from home. I plan to take a two week trip up the Hudson this summer. I anchor and take a nap almost every day I sail.Have a sleeping bag stretched out on the bed,nap on top of it, no table set up since I got her.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never have
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought it used seven years ago - private party - was listed in the local paper.
Other comments Great sailboat--named Moonchaser- Ilike to go out in the evenings.
