Review of the Macgregor 21 by Steve Goldberg

Year built 1974
Location of boat Lake Champlain, Burlington, VT
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, it's great fun and so interesting learning a new skill at my age, 63, I've sailed before but having my own boat is so different like getting to know an new old friend, we learn about eachother every time I go out. I most often sail alone. It's a great boat and has added much to my life.
Gear that's been added No, not yet, one of the shrouds broke so I replaced it.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet.
The boat's best features I was very inexpencive and got me out on the water.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only time it doesn't work is when the wind dies. And I've had trouble with the motor an 1989, Tomos 4hp, but I don't have much luck with lawn mowers either! There is a place on the mast where the hallards attach when not in use, sometimes the jib lines get hung up on it. I don't know if this is original equipment?
Sailing characterisitcs It sails beautifully.
Motoring characterisitcs My motor is not very depenable, when it works every goes fine.
Liveability Not much space, haven't done any overnighters.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments It has given me much pleasure, the price was right, I'm sorry to see the Vermont summer end. I also like that there is so much support on the Web.
