Review of the Macgregor 26X by Morris Rooms

Year built 1998
Location of boat Southampton U.K.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely, it is THE most versatile boat there is available. The sailing (cruising) is very good and the motoring is exceptional.
Gear that's been added VHF, GPS, extra battery, inflatable dinghy, electric outboard for dinghy, new under galley drawers, new under table drawers, porta-potti, various safety equipment, lazy jack system, saiol slugs on main, single line reefing on main, extra reefing points on main, UV protection on roller reefed jib, cockpit table, butane cooker, extra fuel tank.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced hopeless MacGregor drawers under galley with better arrangement.
The boat's best features Good sailing performance (not racing) and exceptional performance under power (Yamaha 50BETL outboard 13-1/4*13 prop)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing of any major significance.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails well from fine reach round to broad reach but does not point that well and has a high tacking angle. Running down wind with the jib is pathetic it needs a whisker pole or a genoa.
Motoring characterisitcs Even with all the extra weight of additions to boat it still gets up to 18kts without ballast and just two people onboard. Watching other boaters faces as a yacht planes by at high speed is a joy to behold.
Liveability Good for long weekends or max one week with two persons onboard, just about liveable for a weekend only with 2-4 persons.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) MacGregor Yachts International, the UK supplier, is very responsive and has a good customer care attitude.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any See above
Other comments I cannot see any other boat that comes close to the versatility of the MG26X, oh did I mention the trailer-ability!!, Have trailed from UK to Brittany and to the Shannon lochs in Ireland via car ferries, beats sailing to places.
