Review of the Macgregor 26X by Tom Dykema

Year built 2000
Location of boat Holland MI USA
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would.
Gear that's been added Ship to shore, 2nd battery, compass, Autohelm, porta-potty Whisker Pole, spot light, gas tanks, Garmin GPS, Genoa furler. Lots of small items - safety equipment, life vests, etc.
Structural or complex improvements Swapped S hooks for twist on bolts on tow chain. Swapped out clevis pins with easier to remove pins. Added pads to swim ladder so your feet don't hurt when climbing in and out of boat. Added name to boat.
The boat's best features Easy to launch. Roomy inside. No wood which means less time spent on maintenance. I love being able to motor 17 MPH at times. We have gotten a lot of compliments on the sleek look.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I had a cosmetic flaw on the entrance to the cabin right from the factory. The counter was also permanently scratched from the factory. The clevis pins were a pain. Nothing has broken.
Sailing characterisitcs It is a quick boat compared to the 21' wooden boat I had before. It is a lot easier to sail. Overall it is slower than boats its size and slightly larger boats.
Motoring characterisitcs I had problems at first because I had an older motor ( 50 hp 1986 Mercury) It broke down once in the middle of the lake, and once it did not start at the launch ramp. Great since then. I can only go 17 MPH and not 24 MPH. It handles better than I thought in rough weather at 7-12 MPH.
Liveability It is comfortable for two. I think it is great for a sailboat this size. Nothing fancy but you can make it fancy.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Jim was a great guy. He helped me over the phone many times. He was a part time dealer but that is why we saved a little money.
Other comments Overall we are happy. Nothing has broken on it unless it was our faught.
