Review of the Macgregor 21 by Jeff Story

Year built 1976
Location of boat Castle Rock, Colorado
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! I love my V21. I sold her in 2005 to afford more reliable and efficient transportation, and I cried like a baby as she left my yard. By strange coincidence, last year, the Guy I sold her to's wife contacted me and informed me that the boat was mine again if I wanted it back, as he left her to me in his will and he had passed on. I was deeply saddened for her loss, but I cant even begin to tell you how excited I was to get ol blue back. I am in the process of bringing her back to life again, and moving to the "First Coast" in Florida for some year round sailing in my favorite boat!
Gear that's been added Monkey Hammocks for storage, CD player for Jimmy Buffett!
Structural or complex improvements Not yet anyway!
The boat's best features I love her light weight. And the swing keel for gunk holing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I would love a little more headroom below.
Sailing characterisitcs When rigged properly for the conditions, she sails with just enough weatherhelm to keep the helmsman alert. She is initially tender but stiffens up at 15 degrees. I have only buried the rail once and that was because we were over canvased and showboating. I love the way she sails!
Motoring characterisitcs She motors great with the 6hp Johnson long shaft I have hanging on her motormount. The only issue i have is the occasional prop strike to the wooden rudder when hard over in a tight turn.
Liveability Well, I once considered living full time aboard, but I was 18 at the time. She has a 3 foot headroomish and four tight berths. Overnight with two is fine with a camping living style. Being a minimalist, I would consider staying about for a good length of time, but only by myself.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments For lake sailing, or coastal weekending, the V21 is just an awesome boat. She will get you to new places quickly, as she often will plane. On GPS, I clocked her at 12 knots on a 15-20 knot day. Not too shabby for such an "antiquated" vessel. I love her to death, and when the big boat finally finds her way into my yard, my V21 will always be right beside her as I will never sell her again. Ever!
