Review of the Macgregor 21 by Benjamin Abood

Year built 1973
Location of boat Lexington, North Carolina
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this have been a great starter boat and I have learned a great deal about sailing without the worries of damaging an expensive boat.
Gear that's been added I added a tiller tamer, interior fan, cup holders, a perfect fit cooler, radio/tv combo, masthead fly, anchor light, 12 volt outlets, and bunch of little stuff.
Structural or complex improvements None at this time. Yet I plan to lead all lines aft and add a topping lift and jiffy reef.
The boat's best features Simple to set up and sail. Easy to trailer and forgiving.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I really don't like the end of boom sheeting but for now it's all I need.
Sailing characterisitcs Easy to spill excess wind, no real bad tendencies to round up/down.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 7.5hp engine and it works fine. I get about 5 knots out of it. I also used a 55lb electric trolling motor with good results.
Liveability I'm 6' 280lbs and there is not much room but it's perfect for me to relax and read at anchor. I could sleep overnight on it but if I added someone else it would be cramped.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments They are cheap and are fun to sail.
