Review of the Macgregor 21 by Michael Faw

Year built 1974
Location of boat my driveway, San Rafael, CA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? In a flash. The boat cost me $650 with trailer, 9 hp outboard, and main, jib, and genoa. And she'll plane at 16 knots with not too much wave action.
Gear that's been added New running rigging, all new blocks,Winchers, lights and tires on the trailer
Structural or complex improvements All rigging run back to the cockpit for single handing, new hinged mast step.
The boat's best features The pivoting centerboard is heavy enough- 400 lbs.- for stability, but retracts to 12" draft.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Lines and blocks were all shot, old fiberglass gets a bit brittle.
Sailing characterisitcs Fast- she planes at 16 to 18 knots
Motoring characterisitcs Tends to wallow
Liveability Not livable. OK for 2 people for a night or 2.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments The Peoples Boat
