Review of the Macgregor 21 by Lee Högman

Year built 1982
Location of boat Mascoutah/Carlyle Lake, IL
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength Press here to select
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely!
Gear that's been added Radio/speakers, boom vang, jiffy reefing system, larger jib, mast-raising system, trailer light bar
Structural or complex improvements Inner stay to convert to a cutter-style rig. The original OEM jib does not fill the fore-triangle created by the mast and forestay, so I bought a Mac 19 jib to fly on the forestay and installed an inner stay to fly the original jib.
The boat's best features Style and swing-keel design.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing I can think of...
Sailing characterisitcs Points very well with both main & jib - but not with main alone. Heels nicely under good winds - very difficult to knock over (but don't push it!)
Motoring characterisitcs Motoring with 9.9 is like skiing. Replacement 4 hp will likely be just fine, as the boat is light and responsive.
Liveability The interior of the Mac 21 is only big enough for 2 adults to sleep aboard. Add a couple kids and its cramped. But for day sailing, its perfect.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have not dealt directly with the MacGregor company.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought my Mac 21 from the St. Louis Sailing Center - great folks there!
Other comments Great boats - I'll move up to a Mac 25 eventually, but will enjoy my 21 as much as possible until then...
