Review of the Macgregor 21 by Bill Ness

Year built 1970
Location of boat 1969 Kentucky Lake KY
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES! I only paid $400 with motor. Granted the mast step was tore out and the motor over heated.
Gear that's been added As stated I had to refiberglass the mast step back in. The tiller was old and gave every one slivers so I made a new one with an extesion that is held under the tiller by magnets and the pivot point is spring loaded for ease of movement. it works great! I took out the swing keel and tore it down to the metal cleaned the rust off and refiberglassed it. I am now doing the top bright work. If any one can find pictures of how the inside can be organized besides the brochere photos I would be greatfull.
Structural or complex improvements Listed above
The boat's best features small trailerable, shallow water, sails with the keel up, great intro duction to the cruising boats. I only sailed Lasers,Butterflyies, and Hobby Cats before.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rigging is confuseing because it was not all ther ewhen I got it. The transom seems weak for the motor, it flexes greatly when motoring.
Sailing characterisitcs Handles great. I haven't expieneced big wind yet but with the right sails up I think that It would handle it well.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 7.5 that pushes it alon g quite nicely, but like I sais before the transon flexes alot.
Liveability 2 people max for short times. My wife after first weekend trip would have let me take a loan out for a bigger boat no matter how much. The experience was fun, but she did not like the small quarters.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't yet
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from private individaul
Other comments Its fun!!!!
