Review of the Macgregor 26X by greg moore

Year built 1998
Location of boat Monterey, Ca
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The guy I bought from used the boat primarily as a "hotel". Commuted from Sacramento to San Francisco. No up grades when I bought the boat, but it was like new. I have spent another $1200 AT West Marine to rig the boat for sailing and basicaly get her ready for what I want in a boat.
Gear that's been added Fish finder, halyards, solar power charger, anchor, radio, numerous "connectors" for the mast raising system and sails, bumpers, probably will replace the batterys. Will probally add new batteries.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features I like the fact I can power at 14 knots and sail if I wish too.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing yet.
Sailing characterisitcs In slop it is best to have the ballast full. Even if not sailing. I found if I pulled the motor up that the bow headed into the wind, seems weard since the weight is in the stern.
Motoring characterisitcs Only did this once but with the ballast empty and 2 aboard with fuel we hit 15 knots on GPS.
Liveability For 2 it is great for a week,
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Did'nt
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No Comment
Other comments I bought a Macgregor because I like to fish and needed a boat that could get out where the fish are, but I also like to sail. Before buying my boat I took a "test sail" on San Francisco Bay. As I stated earlier the guy I bought the boat from never really sailed her. He got nervous when we heeled and got sea sick. In retrospeck I could have offer him less and got the boat. We hit 7 knots with out really having the boat rigged correctly.
