Review of the Macgregor 26X by Bob Meismer

Year built 2001
Location of boat Conception Bay, BCS Mex
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.
Gear that's been added factory extras -- Roller furling, genoa, stove; radios, heavy ground tackle
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features very roomy for its length. very low maint. effort
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. mast light is too thirsty for electricity. rudders must be tied up with bungees to prevent them from slapping around all night. In fact, better rudder attachment would be good. shallow draft & cb make for some wild swings at anchor.
Sailing characterisitcs handles more wind than you'd think.
Motoring characterisitcs with a 9.9 merc bigfoot, need the rudders.
Liveability Three people for 4 months. Close quarters to be sure, but not bad. Next improvement is a Real Head to replace the honey bucket from the dealer, tho...
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Got smacked by a panga one early morning in the port quarter. Impact punctured the hull above the waterline. Panga rose up and deformed the pulpit rail & broke the forestay loose, causing the mast to drop. Fortunately (relatively) i had the sun shade up like an arch, which bent the mast 90 degrees at the spreaders on impact. Otherwise, it would have taken out the transom & probably conked the motor as well.
