Review of the Macgregor 26X by Doug Asbury

Year built 2000
Location of boat Great Lake and Florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No, I liked the inside and the space, but I did not like how it sailed.
Gear that's been added Shore power, antenna on mast
Structural or complex improvements None, usually production boat problems.
The boat's best features The space and the fact that you are a fast trawler if the boat is loaded.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. nothing
Sailing characterisitcs I have owned a 26C or S before this and loved the sailing abilities, but went for the x for the motor speed and space. I have sold the boat and purchased another 26C. Every boat is a compromise and this one you compromise sailing and space for the motoring abilities. It does not point well, it is slow and is hard to come about if the wind is blowing hard. I beat a 26x with a 19 foot pocket cruiser in a race. It was faster down wind, but it was extremely slow up wind.
Motoring characterisitcs Sometimes it did a funny roll when you turn and get hit by a wave. I could get 16mph out of a 50 honda with 6people on board.
Liveability good
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
