Review of the Macgregor 19 by Kevin Meylor

Year built 1993
Location of boat Yankton, SD / Galveston, TX
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The M19 is a very flexible boat. It's compact enough for inexpensive wet slips, and has much better accomodations than anything else in the under-20 segment. It's comfortable with a couple adults, or one adult and a couple kids.
Gear that's been added AM/FM/Cassette Radio with 12 Disc CD Changer Cockpit and V-berth speakers Dual batteries with smart combiner Power panel with battery tester Power inverter for a laptop Wall mounted waste basket
Structural or complex improvements Wheel steering conversion using a pedestal from the new 26M and a dual cable rack and pinion steering system.
The boat's best features Powering ability, flexibility, ease or trailering, and number of berths for it's size.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Having two tillers (motor and rudders) was always a big pain. Finally, it convinced me to undertake the wheel conversion.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails better with a little more than light wind. Doesn't point upwind terribly well. Tends to feel like it's heeling more than it really is.
Motoring characterisitcs Very good for motoring. Once on a plane, she really goes. Our boat came with a heavy four-stroke, which seemed to weigh it down a lot in the stern. Once going to a larger HP, lighter two-stroke, she really gets up and takes off.
Liveability For it's size it's great. Our marina has bathrooms near the dock, so we use the head compartment for storage. The berths are great for a weekend with the kids, or a weekend for two. Extended cruises might be a bit much without a lot of attention to storage, etc.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very good. They've always been friendly and helpful -- through they don't stock parts for these older boats. We bought a pedestal from a newer boat, and they were easy to work with.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A - Private sale from previous owner.
Other comments Would defintely buy the boat. Like all others, it's a compromise, but there's nothing else out there like it. Thanks MacGregor.
