Review of the Macgregor 22 by Bud Gates

Year built 1976
Location of boat Sold
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2012
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Maybe, It was a good introduction into pocket-cruisers but we sold it after a year and upgrade to a Mac 26d.
Gear that's been added Yes: PVC roller furler Topping Lift Cockpit back rests Carpeting GPS Fish Finder VHF Radio Motor controller Dual line reefing Curtains New cushions Plastic drawers for storage
Structural or complex improvements Yes: Fuel locker / cockpit table Rewired entire boat with conduit throughout Folding instrument panel Replaced windows Painted Hull Modified motor to turn with rudder Kick-up rudder Routed all lines to cockpit
The boat's best features Easy to sail Retractable keel ballast
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Macgregor wiring is marginal at best when new. Expect to rewire the entire boat before too long. The boat sits too far back on the trailer causing it to sway at highway speeds.
Sailing characterisitcs Responsive but not a fast boat by any means. With proper trim you can even let go of the tiller and maintain a straight course if the water is calm.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors quite well but very hard to get to reach the motor from the cockpit. After installing the controller I can shift and adjust the throttle from the cockpit. Steering in close quarters is tricky requiring you to turn both the motor and the tiller together.
Liveability Okay for overnight or a weekend but too cramped for any longer. Twice we spent a week moored at Catalina Island which was fun but, like I said, cramped. The V-berth is too short for adults and the dinette/berth is a bit narrow for two and only suited for someone up to about 5'6".
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never attempted contact them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased from private owner.
Other comments It's a good boat for what it's made for but we wanted something we could comfortably cruise with for a couple of weeks.
