Review of the Macgregor 22 by Bud

Year built 1973
Location of boat New Port Richey, FL
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1991
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, the experiences were spiritual and exciting. You develope a lot of patience when waiting for wind. Made it all worth it.
Gear that's been added A parachute that I used as a spinaker and cooking gear. Various coolers but not much else.
Structural or complex improvements Its on land now and I cleaned and preped the bottom for painting. New backing for wenches and much of deck hardware.
The boat's best features You can solo sail very comfortably, often just tying off the rudder will act like auto pilot. Its nice to have a comfortable cabin to wait out a storm in. The pop top saves you from a sun burn and makes for airy cabin.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The keel winch went bad after a while. The cockpit flooring started cracking and letting water into the cabin. The fiberglass under the mast step was disintegrated. The pop top is heavy.
Sailing characterisitcs I have been in heavy winds sailing with main and working jib. I put a PVC pipe over the rudder handle to extend it for better leverage. I have had it flying out on the gulf. I have used it to surf the waves, it was pretty responsive.
Motoring characterisitcs I had a 4 hp Johnson when I got it. It worked pretty well for getting in and out of port. It also helped under sail pretty well.
Liveability I lived in a school bus once for about 6 months. So I am not good one to judge. I've been out 4 or 5 days at a time and was comfortable. But I wouldn't do it with more than two people.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments It was less work than expected and then it was more work than I expected. I would sometimes comeback after a week end banged up with bad weather and still couldn't wait to get out the next week end. Its a good design and the swing keel makes life on the gulf coast a lot easier.
