Review of the Macgregor 22 by Gregory Wright

Year built 1985
Location of boat Tampa, FL

How the boat is used Day sailing

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I am a novice sailor and the MacGregor 22 is an excellent boat on which to learn. She handles easily and the flotation system gives me a sense of safety. I have had to make some minor repairs such as replacing the keel winch and a engine overhaul, but the boat itself is in excellent condition and was mainly used in fresh water so there is no corrosion on the railing.
Gear that's been added Just a new keel winch and new blocks for the mainsheet.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features As I stated above, the flotation system gives me a sense of safety. If I were able I would enlarge the storage compartments or at least their access holes. I also do not like that the cockpit storage opens up in the cabin.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only thing I could really complain about is that the mainsheet attaches to both sides of the hull in the stern. This is very much in the way while sailing or motoring.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails excellently and has nice response. since she is light trailering is a breeze as is getting her in and out of the water.
Motoring characterisitcs I did not really like the mount for the motor. With my 6 hp outboard the prop iwas constantly in the water so I increased the size of the mount by three inches. Again, the mainsheet is in the way as well.
Liveability For a weekend this boat is great with even four people (we are very short.) But more than that a larger boat is a must. Storage is a slight problem.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) You cannot get MacGregor to email you, but if you call they will talk. They were kind enough to send me spec sheets on my boat and the old sales material when I asked. Of course the 22 is no longer in production so there is no real support.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat fom a private individual.
Other comments If you want a good weekend boat which is safe, fun and reliable, or if you are new to sailing and want a boat that is easy to sail you cannot beat the MacGregor 22.
