Review of the Macgregor 22 by Dennis Berube

Year built 1973
Location of boat trailer
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? For sure!
Gear that's been added Guard rails, life vests, compass, more foam flotation, will need a GPS!
Structural or complex improvements Yes. When first bought, I noticed that a few places in the hull were weakened (around the dinette especially, where people had apparently put their body weight against it alot and the fiberglass fatigued, you could actually push in on it), and some in the stern area. I fiberglassed 2 X 2 ribbing into these areas which strengthened the hull like new! You cannot push in on it now! I then re-attached the dinette to the ribbing and it all worked like a charm! Also added wheel steering! Re-fiberglassed the swing keel and put in a new winch! Beefed up the engine well area also, and would not be afraid to install a motor with more hp, perhaps 15 ot 20, horses!
The boat's best features People often say Macs are cheap boats, but since adding the ribbing and making a few other improvements, I think she is as good as any!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Anything that did not function as it should was simply due to neglect or age. I believe any and everything is fixable! I think the boat has a good design to it and have had even a Catalina owner say the my Mac was better!
Sailing characterisitcs Mostly good weather, and am thinking about taking her for a run at the Bahamas! With a few more modifications, I would not be afraid to take her to sea!
Motoring characterisitcs So far I have a 50lb. thrust electric motor that gets the job of docking or re-trailering done!Since beefing up the engine well area, should I decide to go with more hp, I will have no problems that I can foresee!
Liveability Am planning to install a portable stand up shower (when the pop top is up), where the dinette is stationed. The area will serve 3 purposes instead of just two. Eating area, sleeping area, and shower area! Staying on board for several weeks should be no problem at that point! Small galley has refrig, stove, and sink, making extended stays possible!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never have!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a dealer in Conn. and the only problem I had was getting a title here in VA. The reason was because the people I bought it from had paper work saying the boat had a previous title, which it did not! A mistake, thats all, and it has since been remedied! Otherwise the people were great to do business with!
Other comments I love it, and would buy it again in a heart beat. I have also added more foam flotation, and put a lower profile porta-potty in the head area allowing me to extend the forward bunk further back! She is a dream come true and my best boat ever!
