Review of the Macgregor 22 by Keith Gore

Year built 1979
Location of boat Brick NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1988
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I looked at other used boats at that time and all where either too high price or in need of alot of repair. The 22 for its age was in great shape and ready to sail.
Gear that's been added recently purchased new mainsail and rolloer furling genoa, also new honda 8 hp 4 stroke engine. We've added a am/fm stereo and deck lights.
Structural or complex improvements Since the nor'easter of '91 which caused some damage to the boat by ripping out a mooring cleat and winch ,I added extra backing to the cleats and winches.
The boat's best features The 22 is an easy and forgiving boat to sail. This was my first mon-hull boat that I had sailed ,since I learned and raced a Hobie 14 in the early 70's then stopped sailing for 10 years. With the main rolled down she handels well in any wind above 25 knts.Yet she can be very tender at or above hull speed. also found that she does handel best under main alone in higher winds rather than using the jib alone.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs I have found that in any breeze the boat drifts quickly if not under way. This can make docking in tight areas a real test of seamenship. This I found is due to the light weight of the boat.
Motoring characterisitcs Handles well with the 8hp we get the normal humming of the winch cable ,but I found that if we cranck it up then lower it by 5 turns the humming stops.
Liveability It's not bad for one night but would not recomend any long cruises with it.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments This is a great starter boat for anyone. I'm very pleased about how much abuse it can take from the weather. We are hoping in the next 2-3 yrs. to move up to the 26x .
