Easy mast stepping rig

Seeking an easier way to step and unstep the mast than the standard block-and-tackle rig, I devised a way to use the trailer winch to aid in the task. The gin pole is still used. Note how the winch strap passes over the bolt on the yoke and the bolt in the mast mount at the pulpit.

The yoke was made from 2x6 white pine, and cut to slide into place at the front pulpit risers. Pressure from the winch strap holds it in place. The larger plate at the back is removable as necessary.

This photo shows the winch strap as it leads from the winch, through a slot cut in the winch bar, over the yoke.

This photo shows the slot cut in the winch post which allows the hook and strap to re-route behind the winch and up to the yoke. I have trailered the boat several times with this mod and have found that the removal of this metal has not affected the integrity of the post to any significant degree.

System in action. The gin pole needs to be properly positioned so that it works properly when the mast is raised. I have found that making a mark on the jib halyard helps.

I have used this system several times and found it to be safe, dependable, and effective. Operations take place from the safety of the front of the boat (out from under the mast), and on stable ground.
