Review of the Macgregor 21 by VenturED

Year built 1974
Location of boat Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula (Pierce County), WA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It was a good buy for the size and equipment.
Gear that's been added Upgraded outboard to 6 HP Yamaha 4-stroke.
Structural or complex improvements Just now (2016) starting to work on the swing keel restoration. Plans to outfit a mast raising system and buy a trailer. Pop-top hatch lazzarette additions are being considered, along with interior improvements for camping.
The boat's best features
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Swing keel rust, mast support and raising systems.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat seems to point well and handle responsively. It is a good size for our family of 4.
Motoring characterisitcs It really should have a long shaft, but the motor (previous 7.5 HP 2-cycle) moved the boat well.
Liveability It is really only good for weekends or locations where you can sleep ashore.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have contacted local retailers and the new owners of Tattoo - both were helpful and responsive.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments It is big enough you can move about with ease, but not so big it is hard to sail, trailer or launch.
